At Oregon Rohingya Myanmar Muslim Society (ORMMS), we believe that language is a bridge to opportunity, empowerment, and connection. That’s why we’re proud to offer free English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for immigrant and refugee adults in the Portland area.
Why ESL Matters
For many families who have arrived in the U.S. from Myanmar, Bangladesh, or other countries, learning English can be one of the biggest challenges. Without access to culturally supportive programs, many are left behind in education, employment, and daily communication. Our ESL program is designed to meet people where they are — with compassion, patience, and understanding.
Who Can Join?
Anyone in our community ages 16 and older who wants to learn or improve their English skills is welcome. We especially encourage Rohingya, Burmese, Karen, and other refugee and immigrant families to enroll. No previous schooling or English experience is necessary.
What You’ll Learn
Our classes focus on:
Basic conversation and vocabulary
Everyday English for work, school, and shopping
Reading and writing
Listening and speaking confidence
Cultural understanding and life skills
