ORMMS Youth Violence Prevention Workshop: Building Safe Spaces, Stronger Youth, and Healthier Communities
Empowering Young People Through Education, Positive Engagement, and Violence Prevention
The Oregon Rohingya Myanmar Muslim Society (ORMMS) continues its commitment to creating safer, healthier, and more supportive communities through our Youth Violence Prevention and Safe Spaces Initiative.
As part of this effort, ORMMS brought together young people for an interactive Youth Violence Prevention Workshop focused on building positive relationships, strengthening emotional well-being, developing conflict-resolution skills, and empowering youth to make healthy and responsible decisions.
The workshop provided a welcoming environment where young people could openly discuss challenges, share experiences, learn practical life skills, and explore ways to prevent violence in their schools, families, and communities.
Promoting Healthy Relationships and Positive Choices
Throughout the workshop, youth explored important topics related to personal safety, relationships, and community well-being.
Key discussion topics included:
Healthy Friendships and Boundaries: Understanding respectful relationships, personal boundaries, peer pressure, and the importance of positive friendships.
Anger Management and Emotional Well-Being: Recognizing emotions, managing stress and anger, and developing healthy ways to respond to difficult situations.
Conflict Resolution and De-escalation: Learning how to manage disagreements peacefully, recognize escalating situations, and avoid retaliation.
Bullying and Youth Violence Prevention: Understanding how harmful behaviors affect individuals and communities and exploring positive ways to prevent violence.
Community Safety and Responsibility: Discussing how young people can support one another, make safer decisions, and contribute to peaceful communities.
Youth Leadership and Future Goals: Encouraging confidence, teamwork, education, personal growth, and positive future planning.
Learning Through Discussion and Engagement
The workshop emphasized interactive learning, group discussions, practical examples, and opportunities for youth to share their perspectives.
Rather than focusing only on the consequences of violence, ORMMS encouraged participants to explore the importance of communication, empathy, mutual respect, and healthy decision-making.
Young people discussed how everyday choices, supportive friendships, and trusted adults can help prevent conflicts from escalating.
The workshop also emphasized the importance of creating environments where youth feel heard, valued, included, and supported.
