Bridging the Digital Divide: ORMMS Youth Empower Community Members Through Digital Skills Training
Building Digital Skills. Expanding Opportunities. Connecting Communities.
The Oregon Rohingya Myanmar Muslim Society (ORMMS) continues to empower community members through our Digital Bridge Program, providing hands-on digital literacy training, technology access, and practical support for individuals and families facing barriers to using technology.
As part of our ongoing digital inclusion efforts, ORMMS recently brought together youth volunteers and community members for an interactive digital skills workshop focused on understanding email, creating an email account, and learning how to use email in everyday life.
Youth-Led Digital Skills Training
During the workshop, ORMMS youth helped community members learn essential digital skills through patient, step-by-step instruction and one-on-one assistance.
Participants explored:
What is email? Understanding how email works and why it is important.
Creating an email account: Learning how to set up and access a personal email account.
Sending and receiving emails: Practicing basic communication skills.
Using email in daily life: Understanding how email connects people to education, employment, healthcare, and other essential services.
Building digital confidence: Helping participants become more comfortable using computers and online tools.
Our youth volunteers played an important role in supporting participants, answering questions, and helping community members learn at their own pace.
These activities also provide opportunities for young people to develop leadership, communication, and community service skills.
Why Digital Skills Matter
Today, having an email address and knowing how to use technology are essential for many everyday activities.
Digital skills help community members:
Access educational resources and communicate with schools
Search and apply for jobs
Access personal health information and communicate with healthcare providers
Complete online forms and applications
Connect with housing and community resources
Stay connected with family, organizations, and important services
For individuals with limited English proficiency or limited experience using technology, these tasks can be challenging without culturally responsive, hands-on assistance.
ORMMS works to reduce these barriers by providing welcoming and accessible learning opportunities.
