Knowledge for Better Health: ORMMS and OHSU I-CAN Bring Health Literacy to the Community

OHSU Health Literacy Workshop Helps Community Members Better Navigate Healthcare

On May 31, 2026, Oregon Rohingya Myanmar Muslim Society (ORMMS), in partnership with the OHSU I-CAN Program, successfully hosted a Health Literacy Workshop for immigrant and refugee community members in East Portland.

For many newcomers, understanding the U.S. healthcare system can be challenging. Language barriers, unfamiliar healthcare processes, and limited access to culturally responsive information often make it difficult for families to access the care they need. This workshop was designed to help bridge those gaps by providing practical, easy-to-understand health education in a welcoming community setting.

Topics Covered

Participants learned about a variety of important health topics, including:

  • Preventive care and annual health check-ups

  • Nutrition and healthy living

  • Disease prevention

  • Managing stress and overall wellness

  • Understanding common health concerns

  • Communicating effectively with healthcare providers

  • Navigating the U.S. healthcare system

Throughout the workshop, community members actively participated by asking questions, sharing personal experiences, and discussing challenges they have faced when accessing healthcare services.

Creating a Safe Space for Learning

One of the most valuable aspects of the workshop was the opportunity for participants to learn in a comfortable and supportive environment. Community members were encouraged to ask questions openly, gain confidence in seeking healthcare services, and learn practical strategies for improving their health and well-being.

The event also strengthened connections between community members and healthcare resources, helping participants better understand how to advocate for themselves and their families when accessing medical care.

Community Partnership Matters

ORMMS is grateful to the OHSU I-CAN Program, volunteers, and all attendees who contributed to the success of this event. Partnerships like these play an important role in ensuring that immigrant and refugee families have access to accurate, culturally responsive health information.

Looking Forward

At ORMMS, we believe that health education is an important step toward building stronger families and healthier communities. By increasing health literacy and improving access to information, we can help community members make informed decisions and navigate healthcare systems with greater confidence.

Together, we are building a healthier, more informed, and more empowered community—one conversation at a time.
