At Oregon Rohingya Myanmar Muslim Society (ORMMS), we believe strong partnerships between schools and community organizations are essential to supporting student success—especially for immigrant and refugee families. We were honored to be invited by David Douglas School District – Mill Park Elementary School to engage with educators serving a school community where many Rohingya and Burmese students and families live and learn.
Sharing Community Experiences
During this meaningful engagement, ORMMS had the opportunity to share the lived experiences of Rohingya families, including:
Life in Burma (Myanmar)
Experiences in refugee camps
Challenges faced by newly arrived families adjusting to life in the United States
Barriers students may encounter when transitioning into U.S. schools
These stories provided important context for understanding students’ academic, emotional, and social needs.
Supporting Educators & Student Succhttp://camps.Byess
ORMMS presented to more than 60 teachers and school staff, focusing on how schools can better support students and families who are newly arrived from refugee camps. By increasing cultural understanding and awareness, educators are better equipped to help students feel safe, supported, and empowered to succeed.
The Power of Partnership
We are deeply grateful to Mill Park Elementary School and the David Douglas School District for creating space for this important learning and collaboration. Partnerships like this demonstrate the power of schools and community organizations working together to remove barriers and strengthen educational outcomes.
At ORMMS, we remain committed to supporting schools, families, and students through education, advocacy, and community-based support.
Together, we are building understanding, equity, and stronger pathways to success for refugee and immigrant students.
